Sierra Leone is a country in West Africa that is bordered with Guinea in the North. Liberia
in the South, and the Atlantic Ocean in the West. It has a population estimated above six
million people and it capital is Freetown. The country has a topical climate and the oldest university in West Africa,
Fourah Bay College established in 1827 which became the educational center in West Africa.
In 1462, a Portuguese explorer name Pedro Da Centra visited the country who gave it its name Sierra Leao, meaning
Lion Mountains. Sierra Leone became an important center for transatlantic slave trade between sixteen and eighteen
century. In 1808, the country became a British Crown Colony and it gained independent in April 27th 1961. In 1991,
the rebel war began that lasted until 2001 when it was resolved after the United Nation forces led by the Nigerian
defeated the rebel forces.
Between 1991 to 2001 over40, 000 people were killed mostly women and children. Women were sexually abused and
raped; children were captured and recruited by the rebel forces to kill innocent people. The economy was in
shambled, development came to a stand still, destruction of infrastructure, schools and hospitals were damaged,
children can no longer attend schools, people have no access to basic medical treatment, infection and diseases rise
to a high level. Maternal death increased and people continue to die from diseases with out medical treatments. The
brutal war inflicted permanent physical and emotional scars that are evident when you come in contact with the
people and the survivors.
Based on the terrible conditions of our people, the Sierra Leone Nurses Association was founded by a group of Sierra
Leonean nurses in Los Angeles California, in ordered to assist in providing basic medical equipment for the treatment
of the sick and the disable, to reduce infection and diseases. But we cannot do it by ourselves we your support from
all types of people and donations. By working together, we can all make this mission a successful one.
To relieve pain and suffering caused by disease conditions that could be cured or controlled. Provide access to the
people of Sierra Leone to simple but important medical equipment and supplies needed to diagnose medical
conditions and treat diseases. Educate the community to understand ways to prevent the spread of communicable
diseases and to prevent medical problems associated with maternal and child health, Hypertension, Diabetes, Heart
disease, Stroke, Cancer of various types, HIV, AIDS, Malaria and many other diseases. To educate the poor and
underprivileged on subjects useful to individuals and beneficial to the community.
To assist in improving the health care system in Sierra Leone
To assist in providing medical equipments and medications to the people of Sierra Leone.
To provide education by awarding scholarships to qualify pupils that want to purse a career in health care system
To educate health care workers in to cope with the new technology and the changes in health care system.
To educate the public on health promotion and disease prevention
